The honest answer: it depends, but here is what to expect
One of the most common questions we get at Leyabelle Clinic is: How many sessions will I actually need? You have probably seen adverts promising results in 3 sessions. The reality is more nuanced and knowing it upfront will save you time, money and disappointment.
Why laser hair removal needs multiple sessions
Hair grows in cycles: anagen (active growth), catagen (transition) and telogen (resting). Laser energy only destroys hair follicles in the anagen phase when the hair is actively growing. At any given time, only about 20 to 30% of your hairs are in this phase.
This is why a single session removes some hair but not all of it. Repeated sessions at the right intervals catch follicles as they enter the active phase. It is not a flaw in the treatment, it is simply how hair biology works.
Typical session counts by body area
| Body Area | Average Sessions | Interval Between Sessions |
|---|---|---|
| Underarms | 6 to 8 | 4 to 6 weeks |
| Bikini / Brazilian | 6 to 10 | 4 to 6 weeks |
| Full legs | 8 to 12 | 6 to 8 weeks |
| Upper lip / Face | 8 to 12 | 4 weeks |
| Back | 8 to 12 | 6 to 8 weeks |
| Arms | 6 to 10 | 6 to 8 weeks |
What affects your personal session count?
1. Hair colour
Laser works by targeting the pigment (melanin) in the hair follicle. Dark, coarse hair responds fastest. Light brown or red hair takes more sessions. Very blonde, white or grey hair has minimal pigment, which makes laser less effective regardless of session count. We will always tell you this honestly in your consultation.
2. Skin tone
At Leyabelle, we use Nd:YAG laser technology, which is specifically designed to be safe and effective on darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick types IV to VI). If you have been turned away elsewhere, please do come and speak to us. Treating all skin tones safely is something we specialise in.
3. Hormones
PCOS, pregnancy, and hormonal imbalances can cause hair to regrow even after successful treatment. This does not mean the laser did not work. It means new follicles are being stimulated by hormones. Maintenance sessions once or twice a year usually keep this manageable.
4. Following the aftercare instructions
Avoiding sun exposure, not waxing or plucking between sessions (shaving is fine), and attending your appointments on schedule all significantly impact your results. We send you a full aftercare guide after every session.
What about permanent hair removal?
Permanent is the term the beauty industry uses, but the more accurate phrase is permanent hair reduction. After a full course, most clients see 80 to 95% reduction in hair regrowth. A small number of fine hairs may return, especially if hormone levels change. A top-up session once a year or two keeps things smooth.
