If you’re thinking about a career in beauty, aesthetics, or wellness, you’ll quickly run into a wall of letters: VTCT, ABT, CPD, “accredited,” “regulated,” “Ofqual.” It’s genuinely confusing — and choosing without understanding the difference can cost you time, money, and even the ability to get insured or hired later.

“Regulated” vs “accredited” — the difference that matters most
This is the one that trips almost everyone up.
A regulated qualification is overseen by a government regulator — in England that’s Ofqual — and sits on the official Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), at a set level (Level 2, 3, 4 and so on), to a national standard. It’s the most widely recognised route: trusted by employers and accepted by the widest range of insurers.
An accredited course is one that a private body (such as ABT or a CPD provider) has reviewed and approved. Accredited courses can be excellent and very useful — but “accredited” is not the same as a regulated qualification. Recognition depends on who did the accrediting. In short: both have real value; they simply do different jobs.
VTCT — the regulated qualification
VTCT (the Vocational Training Charitable Trust) is one of the UK’s leading specialist awarding organisations for hair, beauty, aesthetics, and complementary therapies, and it’s regulated by Ofqual. A VTCT qualification is a genuine regulated qualification on the RQF, recognised by employers and clinics nationwide.
VTCT also owns iTEC (the International Therapy Examination Council), awarding respected qualifications since 1947. Through iTEC, VTCT qualifications are recognised internationally, in dozens of countries — so they can travel with you. If you want the widest-recognised foundation for a beauty career, this is it.
ABT — accreditation for insurance and practice
ABT (Associated Beauty Therapists) is a professional membership and insurance body, and it accredits courses too. ABT accreditation is primarily about getting you insured to practise a particular treatment. It’s a practical, valuable route — especially for specific treatments — but it isn’t a nationally regulated qualification in the way a VTCT course is. For many therapists, ABT-accredited training is exactly the right tool for the job.
CPD — building on what you already have
CPD (Continuing Professional Development) is the ongoing learning you do after you’re qualified, to keep your skills current and add new treatments to your menu. CPD courses are usually shorter and focused. They’re not Ofqual-regulated and don’t sit on the RQF — think of them as extra rooms built on a solid foundation. Every good therapist keeps doing CPD throughout their career.
National vs international recognition
Recognition isn’t all equal. A VTCT qualification is nationally regulated and, through iTEC, internationally recognised — the widest reach available. Accredited and CPD certificates may be recognised by certain insurers or employers, but this can vary by provider and may not carry across borders. If you might work abroad or for an established clinic, keep that in mind.
Why standards matter
This isn’t box-ticking — standards protect you and your clients:
- Insurance: many insurers require a regulated qualification or an approved equivalent. Always confirm the exact requirement with your insurer.
- Employment: clinics trust recognised qualifications because they know what’s behind them.
- Client confidence: more clients now ask where their therapist trained.
- Safety: regulated training is assessed to a consistent standard — vital in aesthetics and skin treatments.
